SHAH ALAM – The public may be subjected to bag and body searches before entering police stations as part of enhanced security measures, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said. 

Those entering police stations will be thoroughly inspected in the wake of an attack at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor Bahru last Friday, as well as an attempt to seize a weapon from a sentry at the Dato Keramat station in George Town, Penang, yesterday. 

“Everyone who comes to the police station will be checked, and their details will be recorded.  

“Those who appear suspicious will undergo body and bag checks.  

“Those who have no business (with the police station) cannot enter. This is to avoid security issues,” he said at a press conference at Selangor police contingent headquarters today.  

Other measures include installing more CCTV cameras at key spots around station premises, subject to the procurement of such equipment, he added. 

“These measures will be implemented because the safety of police officers on duty as well as the public are involved,” Hussein said.

However, media practitioners who are there on work-related matters will be allowed to enter without restrictions, he added.

When asked about assigning more police officers for night shifts due to security concerns, Hussein said the number of personnel at night will be increased compared to before. 

However, manpower constraints will also have to be taken into consideration, he added. 

In the 2.24am attack on Friday, two police officers at the Ulu Tiram station were killed and another injured by a masked attacker.  

The injured officer shot dead the lone assailant who entered the station premises on a motorcycle with a parang. 

Just before the assailant entered, two university students had come to the police station to lodge a police report on a molestation case which occurred two years ago. 

Suspecting them to be decoys, police have arrested and obtained remand orders for the students, as well as five family members of the assailant. – May 20, 2024
