KUALA LUMPUR – Police have denied investigating state opposition leader Datuk Seri Azmin Ali over comments he made about the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) in the state legislative assembly. 

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said Azmin was indeed questioned today but as a witness in a case involving leaked documents from PKNS. 

“It was not over the matters he raised in the state legislative assembly on February 28. As such, we urge the public not to make unfounded speculations,” Hussein said in a statement. 

The Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman was questioned under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which pertains to the examination of witnesses by police, Hussein added. 

Police have also called in 15 witnesses and recorded their statements today for investigations following a police report on the leaked documents. 

The police report had been lodged on March 14 by a PKNS official who alleged that confidential documents had been leaked and inaccurate information exposed to the public. 

The investigation is under Section 203A of the Penal Code on disclosure of information in the course of performing duties, Hussein said. 

Azmin, the Hulu Kelang assemblyman, yesterday said he had been summoned to the Shah Alam police station for his statement over remarks he made in the Selangor assembly in March, questioning alleged misappropriation by PKNS. 

PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan today said the police’s investigation into Azmin for carrying out his duties as a state lawmaker was a violation of the immunity privilege given to legislators. 

PN had also accused the Selangor government of cowardice and desperation aimed at covering up possible administrative malpractice. – May 21, 2024
