Those without VEPs could face fines, jail time, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke

PUTRAJAYA – The Transport Ministry will fully enforce the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) on foreign vehicles at the Malaysia-Singapore entry points starting October 1.

Minister Anthony Loke said the practice, which has been implemented since April 2019, was to ensure foreign vehicle owners adhered to Malaysian road laws.

“Anyone driving foreign motor vehicles without VEPs before entering or being in Malaysia has contravened Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he told a press conference at his ministry here today.

“If convicted, (the individual) could face a compound or fine of no more than RM2,000, or imprisonment of no more than six months, in accordance with Section 119(2) (of the act).”

Meanwhile, Loke said the Road Transport Department had the authority to ban any foreign vehicles without VEPs from entering Malaysia, or order them to leave if they had offences under the Road Transport Act.

Foreign vehicle owners planning to cross the Causeway and Second Link in Johor have until October to renew or register for VEPs. 

“The ministry hopes all foreign vehicle owners register and activate their VEP RFIDs to ease the entry and exit process.

“Only 70,000 Singapore-registered vehicles have registered and activated their VEP tags, compared to over 200,000 vehicles that are registered but have not activated their respective VEPs.”

Loke also said the system would be implemented at the Thai border in the second phase. 

Parties interested in implementing and operating the system may pitch to the ministry between July 1 and September 1 this year, following a briefing session on June 24. 

However, no government funds will be used to cover any cost, Loke said. – May 28, 2024
