Police arrest 21 members of crime syndicate ‘Gang TR’, 20 to be charged today: Shuhaily

Authorities say the individuals have been involved in drug dealing, murder, extortion, causing injury, mischief by fire

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested 21 individuals identified to be members of five organised crime groups, Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said.

Twenty of them are being charged in court today under Section 130v (1) of the Penal Code, for being members of organised criminal groups, he added.

The individuals, aged between 26 and 51, were arrested between May 3 and last week, and have been remanded until May 30 under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

One gang member is receiving medical treatment and will be charged after he recovers, Shuhaily added.

The gangs are identified by numbers, namely, 08, 18, 21, 24, and 36, and are known collectively as “Gang TR”

“They have been active in several areas in Selangor, in drug dealing, violent crimes such as murder, extortion, causing injury, and mischief by fire,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman headquarters today.

Asked about the time taken to gather intelligence on the five groups, Shuhaily said it took about two years as police had to connect one group to another.

He said arrests were made in Johor, Pahang and Selangor.

The offence of being a member of organised crime groups can lead to imprisonment of no less than five years, and no more than 20 years if convicted, he added.

He also said that the individuals have been active since 2019, and the police are continuing their identification of members. – May 29, 2024
