Digital billboard catches fire, debris falls along Federal Highway

Nine people injured are maintenance staff who were working on structure when blaze started

KUALA LUMPUR – A huge digital billboard along the Federal Highway, near Universiti Malaya, caught fire at 1.25pm today.

Nine people who were maintenance workers were injured in the incident in which bits of the billboard’s LED screen fell off the structure.

In videos posted on social media, some of the debris is also seen landing on the other side of the highway as vehicles swerve to avoid being hit.

Videos also showed the workers coming down from the billboard and firefighters trying to put out the fire.

Confirming the incident, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said its Petaling Jaya station received a distress call at 3.15pm today regarding the fire on the billboard, located at KM33.8 of the Federal Highway near the Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya.

The operation led by Petaling Jaya fire chief Rosman Majid put out the fire with the use of fire engines, an aerial ladder platform and a water tanker. Seventeen personnel from the Petaling Jaya, Jalan Penchala, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam fire stations were also involved.

The nine victims were sent for medical assistance, before the operation ended at 3.45pm.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. – May 31, 2024
