Protect the most vulnerable: Syahredzan calls for action on deaf driver assault case

Bangi MP stresses that rule of law must be upheld and protected, without compromise, and everyone deserves equal protection of the law, irrespective of their status or influence

KUALA LUMPUR – Police should protect the most vulnerable in society, as everyone deserves equal protection of the law, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has said in the case of the alleged assault of a deaf e-hailing driver by a VVIP’s bodyguard.

He welcomed Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s commitment to thoroughly investigate the case, especially if allegations of alleged impropriety by the police are true.

“Laws and enforcement authorities should protect ‘the most vulnerable’ in society.

“This is a country based on the rule of law. The rule of law must be upheld and protected, without compromise,” Syahredzan said in a statement on X.

“Everyone deserves equal protection of the law, irrespective of their status or influence,” he added.

The bodyguard being investigated is a member of the security detail of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail, who has called for a thorough investigation, urging the authorities to give the victim justice. The crown prince said the escort is from the police force.

The case has united various quarters in calling for a thorough investigation, including from the opposition’s chief whip, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, after details emerged that the e-hailing driver said he felt pressured to drop the matter when he went to the police station following the incident on May 28.

The deaf driver, Ong Ing Keong, also said he was given compensation offered by a representative from the palace who had been present at the police station.

“There are many questions regarding how the investigation into what occurred to Mr Ong Ing Keong is being conducted. If the allegation of what happened with the investigation is true, then appropriate action must be taken by the police,” Syahredzan said on social media platform X. – June 1, 2024
