Contaminated drain: Luas launches investigation into blue water flow in Sg Kandis

Regulator suspects a nearby industrial site disposed blue paint that flowed into the river

9:37 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) detected a blue water flow in Sg Kandis near Jalan Sellathevan, Klang yesterday.

A team from Luas promptly arrived at the location after the contamination was discovered at 12.30pm on Saturday, and conducted a thorough investigation until late afternoon to trace the source of the blue water in the surrounding area, it said on Facebook.

The investigation led Luas to suspect an industrial site on Jalan Omboh as the source, where blue paint had been disposed of on the premises.

It said further inspection revealed that a blue-coloured water pool at the site had drained into a nearby ditch, subsequently flowing into Sg Kandis.

Luas collected water quality samples, which have been sent to the Chemistry Department for detailed analysis and enforcement action.

Luas is now preparing to open an investigation under Section 79(1)(c) of the LUAS Enactment 1999 for the offence of contaminating a water source.

Concurrently, Luas has communicated with the Environment Department and the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) to take enforcement actions within their respective jurisdictions.

“The Selangor State Government and Luas emphasise and urge all premises/industrial site owners to be aware and vigilant about their site activities.

“Ensure that operations, safety, and equipment maintenance are properly controlled and monitored to prevent any risks to water sources, especially rivers,” it said.

“The Selangor state government, Luas, and related agencies will not compromise and will take strict action against any party responsible for causing problems and contaminating the state’s water sources through the authority and legislation of various agencies.” – June 2, 2024
