KUALA LUMPUR – All parties in the unity government have agreed that PKR will represent the coalition in the Sg Bakap by-election, Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chow Kon Yeow said today.

PKR had contested the seat in the state election last August, fielding Nurhidayah Che Rose, who lost to Perikatan Nasional’s Nor Zamri Latiff.

The seat was vacated following the death of Zamri, 56, on May 24.

The Election Commission (EC) has yet to set a date for the by-election but will meet on June 6 to discuss the matter.

“There was no dispute when deciding on PH’s representatives for the by-election. Every component party agreed to field a candidate from PKR,” Chow said at a press conference in George Town today.

Chow added that Datuk Mohamad Hamid, who is Penang PKR deputy chairman, had been selected as the coalition’s Sg Bakap by-election director.

Four deputy directors will also be appointed to help manage the by-election, to represent each of the parties in the unity government, namely PKR, DAP, Amanah and Barisan Nasional (BN).

“We have forged a spirit of togetherness and unity when working together for the few previous by-elections, such as seen in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election. So, we’re going into this (Sg Bakap by-election) with the same spirit.

“We will go all out in winning this seat again where we will prove that we’re with the rakyat in developing the state, and particularly Sg Bakap,” said Chow, who is also Penang chief minister.

Also present at the announcement were PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Amanah’s Faiz Fadzil, BN’s Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir and DAP’s Lim Hui Ying.

Chow said the name of the PKR candidate would be revealed after the EC had set the dates for the by-election. – June 3, 2024
