Former DPP appointed to represent Zayn Rayyan’s parents

Fahmi Abd Moin takes up case after previous lawyer’s withdrawal

KUALA LUMPUR – Former deputy public prosecutor Fahmi Abd Moin has been appointed to represent the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, the murdered autistic child.

Confirming this to Scoop, Fahmi said he would now represent the parents, who are under a seven-day police remand until Friday.

When asked about his decision to represent the couple, he said that, as a solicitor, it was his professional obligation to support clients who requested his help.

“The family officially contacted my law firm, Messrs Fahmi Abd Moin, to represent both parents. As an advocate, it is my duty to represent them,” he said.

Earlier today, the previous lawyer, Mahmud Abdul Jumaat of Emir Mahmud & Co, said he was no longer representing the duo and that the decision was made due to “unavoidable circumstances”. 

Previously, Mahmud was appointed by Zayn Rayyan’s parents, both aged 28, after the couple were detained by police at their family home in Puncak Alam last Friday. 

He was also present during the remand hearing for the couple at the Petaling Jaya courthouse last Saturday, where magistrate Ainaa Muhammad Kamal granted a seven-day remand.

Earlier, Scoop reported that Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the parents were remanded for a week to allow further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code on murder. 

On December 6, last year, Zayn Rayyan’s body was found in a creek about 200m from his family’s home at Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya. 

The victim was confirmed to have been murdered based on the autopsy, which revealed injuries to his neck and body. 

The day before, police confirmed they had received a report on the child’s disappearance from his family. – June 4, 2024
