UM jumps five spots to 60th on QS world rankings

University highlights that this puts it in top 4% from 1,503 institutions globally, notes 10-place climb since 2023

KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Malaya has gone up five rungs on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2025 to the 60th spot.

In a Facebook post, the university shared that the new ranking positions it in the top 4% of 1,503 QS-evaluated educational institutions worldwide.

“This accomplishment marks a five-place improvement from the previous year, and a notable 10-place climb since the 2023 rankings.

“UM maintains its status as the leading university among 28 ranked Malaysian institutions, and holds the third position in Southeast Asia. These milestones underscore UM’s continued excellence and progress in the global academic arena.”

The university attributed its achievement to its recognition among academicians and employers globally, adding that its reputational indicators in the evaluation “highlight (its) reputation”.

The indicators include its 34th rank for employer reputation and 62nd spot for academic reputation.

The university also noted its improvements in other categories, such as 140th in the international research network, an increase of eight places, 163rd in employment outcomes (123 places), 163rd in student-faculty ratio (15 places), 234th in international students (20 places), and 324th in international faculty (22 places).

“Domestically, UM is the top Malaysian university for employer reputation, academic reputation, employment outcomes, international research network, and sustainability.”

According to the QS Top Universities website, UM peaked at 59th place in 2021 but dropped to 65th a year later. – June 5, 2024
