Putrajaya top cop confirms several witnesses also gave their statements, police questioning why delivery person shook box based on CCTV footage

KUALA LUMPUR – Police are expected to summon Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing today to have his statement recorded to assist in the investigation into the bomb hoax incident yesterday. 

It is reported that Putrajaya police chief A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said police have already recorded statements from several witnesses over the incident. 

“We expect to record the minister’s statement this afternoon to aid the investigation,” The Star reported him as saying. 

It was reported that a suspicious package had been sent to the headquarters of the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry yesterday but was later confirmed to be a fake “bomb”.

The item looked like a bomb but was proven to be fake after detailed inspections, Asmadi said. 

“It was assembled using a PVC pipe and a timer. Despite its appearance, we’ve confirmed it as a simulated bomb. 

“The parcel arrived via courier at 11.19am and reached the 14th floor by 2.45pm. 

“Following this, the bomb squad was called in, along with bomb-sniffing canines,” he said. 

Police have also recommended the building management implement standard operating procedures for handling packages intended for the minister, Asmadi said. 

Initial investigations also revealed that the package originated from a branch office of a courier company in Sg Buloh. 

“We have also obtained video footage of the delivery, conducted by a male individual. We are questioning the reason behind the delivery person shaking the box. 

“So far, no threatening letters have been found,” he said, urging anyone with information to contact their nearest police station. – June 6, 2024
