Police, govt challenge court decision awarding doctor RM145,000 over wrongful arrest

Doctor says he was not told the reason for his arrest, was treated inhumanely while detained

KUALA LUMPUR – The government and police department have challenged the sessions court’s decision to award a medical doctor RM145,000 in damages for unlawful arrest. 

The notice of appeal cited by Scoop names ACP Lim San Aik, ASP Tay Chew Thwa, the inspector-general of police, and federal government as appellants while Dr Ranjeet Singh Sangha is listed as the respondent. 

The document was filed on May 29 by federal counsel Afiq Nazrin Zaharinan. 

On June 21 last year, Ranjeet filed a claim at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court alleging a group of police officers had raided his home in Green Park Residence on August 21, 2021, at 1am while he was sleeping. 

Following the raid, Ranjeet was arrested. The doctor claimed that police did not inform him about the reasons for the arrest and had failed to comply with Section 23 of the Criminal Procedure Code. 

Additionally, Ranjeet mentioned that he was treated inhumanely during his detention.

As a result, he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder from the incident.

After the trial, on May 17, sessions court Judge Zulqarnain Hassan ruled in favour of Ranjeet, awarding him RM145,000 in damages. – June 6, 2024
