Local authority deputy chief nabbed for taking monthly bribes from vice dens

Three individuals also held over kickbacks from entertainment outlets, massage parlours

3:16 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a deputy director of a local authority along with three enforcement personnel on suspicion of accepting monthly bribes from entertainment outlets and massage parlours over the past several months.

An MACC source revealed that the main suspect, a deputy director, allegedly received monthly bribes ranging from RM100,000 to RM500,000. These bribes were purportedly paid by entertainment outlets and massage parlours engaged in illegal activities or operating without valid permits.

“These bribes enabled these illegal establishments to continue operating without facing enforcement actions,” said the source.

Following the arrest of the deputy director, the MACC apprehended three additional individuals believed to have acted as intermediaries, distributing the bribe money to other local authority enforcement personnel.

All the suspects were detained in several locations around Kuala Lumpur in an operation conducted by the MACC yesterday.

The three suspects including the deputy director were remanded for seven days until June 14, while one suspect, who is formerly with an enforcement agency, was remanded for five days until June 12.

Magistrate Shairil Farhana Ruslan issued the remand orders for all suspects, aged between 30 and 40-years-old, after the MACC made the remand application at the Dang Wangi police station.

It was learned that through the arrests, the MACC had seized RM200,000 in cash, jewellery and 28 gold wafer coins, with their total worth yet to be determined.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur MACC director Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Husin when contacted confirmed the arrests, saying the case was being investigated under Sections 17(a) and 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. – June 8, 2024
