Not cracks, just leftover construction marks: Works Ministry confirms SPE flyover safety

Following public concern, ministry says inspections reveal no fractures, structure unaffected by visible lines

KUALA LUMPUR – The Works Ministry has confirmed there are no fractures on the Jalan Cheras flyover, assuring the safety of the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) following public concern on increasingly visible cracks in the structure.

In a post on social media on X today, the ministry said that the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), the expressway concessionaire, and its consultants had conducted a site inspection at 11pm last night.

“The apparent cracks depicted in the images are black lines left over from construction joints during previous concrete works.

“Consultants also confirmed that the structure of the highway portal is safe and not affected by the black lines. An inspection report and safety verification will be prepared and submitted to the LLM,” the ministry added.

Earlier today, minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi responded to an X post, raising concerns about how the crack in the flyover appeared to be getting bigger.

Noting that he has instructed LLM and the SPE concessionaire to immediately look into the matter, the minister said the safety of all quarters, especially road users, must be prioritised.

The SPE, fully opened on November 3 last year, features a dual carriageway and seven elevated interchanges.

The expressway is divided into four main sections, namely Kerinchi-Salak (Section 1), Salak-Pandan (Section 2), Pandan-Setiawangsa (Section 3) and Setiawangsa-Taman Melati (Section 4), spanning a total distance of f 20.7km.

It connects several other highways, including the SPRINT Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway and Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2, to enhance network efficiency and reduce congestion in Kuala Lumpur. – June 8, 2024
