KUALA LUMPUR – Two people were killed and 36 injured in an accident between a tour bus and a trailer lorry at Jalan Bahau-Keratong, Rompin, around 1.30am today.

Meanwhile, one person in the incident was unharmed, according to a Fire and Rescue Department statement this morning.

It said that the bus, en route from Melaka to Terengganu, was transporting a group of school teachers who were on a benchmark visit.

“The group of teachers were from SK Jeram, Masjid Tanah, Melaka.

“The firefighters, assisted by members from the Jempol, Segamat and Chini fire stations, conducted the rescue operation,” it said.

Earlier, a viral video captured the moment when a bus crashed into an oil palm plantation adjacent to the road.

Some of the accident victims were seen lying on the road while members of the public rushed to help them.

It was reported that the bus was carrying 39 passengers, including the driver.

“The cleaning work at the accident site has been completed, and the Fire Department has already examined the area.

“All the victims have been evacuated,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Rompin police chief Nor Azman Yusof said the bus, carrying 39 passengers with two drivers, had lost control and hit the lorry laden with iron coils before overturning on the road.

He said the bus was carrying teachers along with their children to Terengganu for the programme.

One teacher died on the spot, while the second driver, who had yet to be identified, died on the way to hospital, he added.

“Initial investigations found that the accident occurred when the bus driver lost control and collided with a trailer before overturning on the roadside slope,” he told reporters at the scene.

Those injured were taken to Muadzam Shah Hospital here and Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan.

Nor Azman appealed to eyewitnesses to provide information on the accident. – June 9, 2024
