Two-year-old girl becomes second death due to food poisoning from same school

Both victims died after consuming food brought home by their parents from an event at the school

12:57 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have confirmed a second death linked to the same school in a food poisoning case which led to the death of a 17 year-old boy yesterday.

The second victim is a two-year-old girl who fell ill after consuming food brought home by her father who works as a security guard at the school, Gombak district police chief Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said.

The girl’s father brought home food following an event that was held at the school on June 8, and the girl ate it.

Yesterday, the child began exhibiting symptoms of fever, vomiting and diarrhoea, he said in a statement.

The victim was later pronounced dead by a medical officer while receiving treatment at Selayang Hospital.

In the case of the 17-year-old, he also ate the food from the same programme at the school that was brought home by his mother on June 8.

“After eating the food, the victim and his parents experienced diarrhoea,” said Noor Ariffin.

However, the teen fell unconscious yesterday and was rushed to hospital after his father contacted the Malaysian Emergency Response Service (MERS) 999.

He was pronounced dead yesterday at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Noor Ariffin said the bodies of both victims have been sent to the forensics unit at the Hospital Selayang for further investigation.

He also urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to assist police in the investigation.

They should contact inspector Heirme bin Che Mad at 014-2389151, inspector Khalpna a/p Rajandhiran at 012-5018901, or the Gombak district police headquarters operations room at 03-61262222.

While police have not named the school involved, Harian Metro reported that it was a religious school in Sg Cincin which had hosted the Amal Islami Programme, where food was provided by the organiser. – June 11, 2024
