No fare hikes or risk losing permits, PM warns school bus operators

Warning comes in response to reports of school bus operators in Klang Valley considering fare increases due to govt's targeted fuel subsidy programme

1:32 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – School bus operators who hike their fares risk losing their permits, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s stern warning issued today.

“Consider this a warning. Beware if you hike your fares after getting fuel subsidies. If you increase fares, we will revoke your licence,” he said at a government event held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.

Previously, Scoop reported that school bus operators in the Klang Valley are considering raising fares following the government’s targeted fuel subsidy programme, which saw diesel prices being sold in the peninsula at RM3.35 per litre.

Earlier, express bus and school bus operators were warned by Transport Minister Anthony Loke against increasing fares.

He said this is because the diesel subsidy continues to be given to these bus operators through diesel fleet cards under the Subsidised Diesel Control System.

“We don’t control the price for school bus fares, we just encourage discussions between school bus operators and parent-teacher associations.”

Express bus operators cannot arbitrarily increase fares because they are under the purview of the Land Public Transport Agency. – June 14, 2024
