KUALA LUMPUR – Police have opened an investigation paper into the alleged disseminated details of the Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin murder probe on a social media chat group.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the investigation is being carried out in accordance with Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972, Section 203A of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“Police have received two reports, one from the victim’s family and the other from the case’s investigating officer,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.

It was reported that Zayn’s family lodged a police report yesterday about a leak of details of the murder investigation on social media.

Hussien also urged the public to refrain from sharing any content classified under the Official Secrets Act.

“Such actions not only interfere with the investigation but also disrupt the prosecution process in court, and legal action would be taken against any individual found sharing such content,” he added.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of Zayn’s father, Fahmi Abd Moin, confirmed that the family had filed a police report at Kg Baru Subang Police Station at 6.40pm yesterday.

He said, for now, the family left it to the police to carry out the investigation.

“The police have also informed us that they will work with Malaysian Multimedia Communications Commission to take down the content involved.

“The family has left it to the authorities to conduct an investigation, but if the content is still being spread on social media, they will take further action according to the provisions of the law,” he said.

Yesterday, Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC has been asked to collaborate with police regarding the circulation of screenshots purportedly showing the investigation papers for the murder case of 6-year-old Zayn.

Bukit Aman senior cop Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain also said the charge of neglect under the Child Act 2001 was finally used against autistic child Zayn’s parents after much deliberation by police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

He said the public prosecutor decided the Child Act was the most suitable for framing the charges based on evidence and statements taken.

This was despite the fact that the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, he told a press conference today. – June 15, 2024
