Gombak food poisoning: police question principal, teachers after two deaths

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have recorded statements from a total of 22 people in the food poisoning case at a Gombak school that killed two people.

Gombak police, in a statement, said among those questioned were the principal and teachers from Sekolah Rendah Agama Integrasi Sg Chinchin, in the same district, where tainted food was served on June 7 at an inter-school event.

“Police have questioned another seven who were also victims (of the food poisoning) including the principal and teachers.

“Investigation papers will be sent to the deputy public prosecutor after the autopsy reports are received within a month’s time,” police said in a message to a media chat group.

Police earlier questioned the external food caterer who supplied food to the school, which had hosted an Islamic charity skills programme for 30 schools in the Gombak district.

Two people died as a result of eating the contaminated food: a 17-year-old boy and a female toddler, both of whom had parents who brought home food from the event.

A total of 247 people were exposed to the food, and 82 of them fell ill.

The Selangor Health Department said the tainted food was fried bihun and fried eggs, while Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad said salmonella had been the cause of the poisoning. – June 20, 2024
