[UPDATED] Traffic chaos after tree falls near Tun Razak tennis centre

KUALA LUMPUR – A tree has fallen near the Tun Razak National Tennis Centre at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim due to strong winds.

This caused a lane obstruction, resulting in traffic congestion in the area.

Traffic police at the scene are diverting motorists heading to Hentian Duta, Bukit Tunku and surrounding areas due to the obstructions.

Recently, there have been multiple fallen tree incidents in Klang Valley during downpours.

On June 4, five people, including two children, who were travelling in two cars, had their vehicles struck by a tree on Jalan Kapar Batu 6, Klang.

Days before that, trees fell in Mont Kiara, Sentul, Bulatan Pahang and other areas here when heavy rain and strong winds hit the capital.

On May 7, one person was confirmed dead and two were injured after a massive tree fell along Jalan Sultan Ismail, near the Shangri-La Hotel.

The 47-year-old man died at the scene of the incident, which also damaged 17 vehicles on Jalan Sultan Ismail and the Kuala Lumpur Monorail track.

Following the recurring incidents, Federal Territories Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa ordered Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to remove high-risk trees in the area.

DBKL said it had been taking measures to identify aged and high-risk trees since 2019.

Meanwhile, another fallen tree incident on the Besraya Highway near Serdang Lama, heading towards Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), caused traffic congestion around the Sapura office this evening.

The Malaysian Highway Authority said the fallen tree at KM1.8 has obstructed part of the road, severely disrupting traffic flow towards UPM. – June 25, 2024
