Fake bomb at Tourism Ministry sent by imposter: police

Package sender had used someone else’s identity to sign off on it, says KL top cop

2:31 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The ongoing police investigation into the false bomb threat at the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry office earlier this month is now focusing on a parcel sender who used someone else’s identity to sign off at a courier company.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said investigators had acquired information about the origin of the parcel, which was dropped off at the courier company’s Sg Buloh branch on June 5.

He added that the suspect had opted for same-day delivery and had used another individual’s name to sign off on the package, which the latter confirmed was not his own.

“Investigators have tracked down the man based on his name, and police have recorded his statement. He denied sending the parcel and asserted his innocence. This was corroborated by investigators.

“CCTV footage from the courier company’s office shows the suspect who dropped off the parcel wearing a mask upon entering the branch.”

At the same time, Rusdi also emphasised the requirement for all premises, such as offices, businesses and shops, to ensure that individuals removed their face masks for identification purposes at service counters.

This, he said, was aimed at assisting police investigations using facial recognition in the event of any criminal incidents.

The Tourism Ministry’s staff and visitors experienced temporary chaos when they were ordered to evacuate the building due to an alleged bomb threat on June 5.

However, hours after the order, Putrajaya police confirmed that the threat was a hoax. Initial investigations revealed that the package, which contained a PVC pipe with a wire and a timer, was not a bomb. – June 27, 2024
