PKR founder member Syed Husin Ali dies at 87

Political veteran passes today, having been admitted to hospital on second day of Aidiladha

KUALA LUMPUR – Syed Husin Ali, one of the founding members of PKR, died today at the age of 87.

News of his passing was shared by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil via his social media posts.

Syed Husin was reported to be in critical condition on Wednesday and breathed his last in the early hours of this morning.

“I have just received the sad news that Dr Syed Husin Ali, deputy chairman of the Keadilan advisory council, passed away early this morning,” Fahmi said.

“I visited him at Selayang Hospital last Thursday. He was admitted to the hospital on the second day of Hari Raya Aidiladha.”

Fahmi said Syed Husin contributed significantly to the party and the people, publishing many books, including Dua Wajah: Tahanan Tanpa Bicara, which recounts his experience of detention under the Internal Security Act 1960, and Sejarah dan Dasar Perjuangan Keadilan. 

He was also involved in various elections and had a long history of struggle in the nation’s politics, Fahmi said.

He also said Syed Husin held numerous positions, including serving as a senator in the Dewan Negara, deputy president of Keadilan, president of Parti Rakyat Malaysia and a professor at Universiti Malaya.

“Dr Syed Husin was a well-respected figure in the party, often approached by the leadership for guidance. He was patient, gentle and disciplined, and he offered much advice, including to me personally.

“May Allah SWT forgive all his sins and place his soul among the righteous,” Fahmi’s post read. 

Fahmi also recalled supporting Syed Husin’s campaign for the Petaling Jaya Selatan parliamentary seat in a past general election.

In 2003, Syed Husin was appointed deputy president of PKR following the merger of Parti Rakyat Malaysia, which he led as president, with Parti Keadilan Nasional. – June 29, 2024
