We’re sorry: Mid Valley launches probe into escalator mishap

Management apologises after shoppers recount harrowing experience, determined to find cause, prevent future escalator failures

KUALA LUMPUR – The management of Mid Valley Megamall, IGB Real Estate Investment Trust, is investigating the cause of a major escalator malfunction at the shopping mall yesterday.

In a statement, IGB apologised for the incident, emphasising its commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for the mall’s patrons.

The company said it will work closely with relevant authorities from the Occupational Safety and Health Department and its maintenance operator.

“We are relieved that there were no injuries and continue to advise all mall patrons to exercise caution when using the escalators,” it said in a statement.

“We take this incident very seriously and will ensure all precautionary measures are implemented to resolve this matter as soon as possible and to prevent future occurrences.”

The drama unfolded when a shopper shared their terrifying experience on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu. 

The post, written in Chinese, described the harrowing moments when the escalator began to malfunction, prompting shoppers to flee for safety.
