Previous governments turned blind eye to prostitution, illegal gambling dens in KL: Anwar claims elements of bribery in illicit activities

Prime minister is intent to combat against such unlawful establishments, asserts that prevalence of them implies elements of bribery, also hints that MACC could be looking into matter soon

3:29 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya is intent on combating prostitution and illegal gambling dens operating in the city centre here, despite previous governments’ nonchalant attitude towards the issue, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Asserting that the prevalence of such unlawful establishments implies elements of bribery, Anwar also hinted that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) could be looking into the matter soon.

“This issue was ignored for so long, including by previous governments…I believe that if there are any prostitution or illegal gambling dens, there must be elements of bribery (involved).

“(MACC investigations into the matter) have not happened yet, but I believe it’s heading in that direction,” the prime minister told reporters after attending the Global Madani Forum 2024 today.

Anwar said this when questioned on the supposed prevalence of such illicit activities in the capital, amid Indonesia’s move to shut down Dolly, one of Southeast Asia’s largest red-light districts.

In May, Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa announced the establishment of a special unit, the KL Strike Force, to tackle security issues threatening public safety and order in the Federal Territory.

The unit operates in an integrated manner with the involvement of the Royal Malaysian Police, the Immigration Department, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, as well as the Customs Department.

Last month, Dr Zaliha reportedly said further discussions would be held to widen the terms of reference for the unit and ensure integrated action towards the eradication of prostitution in the capital. – July 11, 2024
