KUALA LUMPUR – MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang-PN) has described the Dewan Rakyat’s decision to suspend him from attending parliamentary sessions for six months as yet another dark moment for Malaysian democracy.

Quipping that he was forced to step back, Wan Fayhsal also lamented that he would not be able to participate in the upcoming Supply Bill for 2025.

“Another black mark against the nation’s parliamentary democracy. I was not even given a chance to defend myself in Dewan (Rakyat) earlier. As a result of this suspension, I will miss the (tabling) of Budget 2025 during the upcoming October session.

“God-willing, my comrades will continue to fight and voice out for the interests of the people in the August house,” he said in a post on his Facebook page.

In a bloc vote today, 110 lawmakers voted to suspend Wan Fayhsal from the Dewan Rakyat and parliamentary select committees for six months. Another 63 MPs opposed the motion, while 46 were absent and three abstained.

Earlier, four MPs debated the motion, with two from each side of the aisle – Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu-PN), Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (Larut-PN), Azli Yusof (Shah Alam-PH) and law minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang-BN).

The motion to suspend Wan Fayhsal comes after he made allegations outlined in a poison-pen letter in the Dewan Rakyat on July 1 against an Employees Provident Fund (EPF) officer regarding Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s privatisation deal.

Wan Fayhsal, who is a member of the special select committee on international relations and international trade, accused the EPF officer of being the “mastermind” behind the proposed MAHB deal. – July 18, 2024
