Wan Fayhsal’s six month suspension is ‘an injustice to him’, says Tuan Ibrahim

PAS deputy president said the PN lawmaker was treated unjustly in the Dewan Rakyat today

8:30 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang-PN) should have at least been referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee over his poison-pen letter fiasco, said PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Tuan Ibrahim told Scoop that Wan Fayhsal was treated unjustly in the Dewan Rakyat after being suspended from parliamentary sessions and its select committees for six months.

“The act of not allowing the accused to provide his views is something that should not have happened. He had the right to defend himself and state his views before the punishment was imposed against him.

“(Wan Fayhsal) said he received a poison-pen letter, and further investigation needs to be carried out into the claims in it, at least (it should) be referred to the Rights and Privileges Committee for him to prove his claims.

“The immediate suspension of Wan Fayhsal is an injustice to him.”

However, during the sitting today, Chong Zhemin (Kampar-PH) argued that opposition lawmakers were allowed to debate the motion.

Four MPs debated the motion, two from each side of the aisle – Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Azli Yusof, and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The motion ended with 110 lawmakers voting to suspend Wan Fayhsal, while another 63 MPs opposed the motion, while 46 were absent, and three abstained.

The motion came after Wan Fayhsal made allegations outlined in a poison-pen letter in the Dewan Rakyat on July 1, against an Employers Provident Fund (EPF) officer regarding Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) privatisation deal.

Wan Fayhsal, who is a member of the Special Select Committee on International Relations and International Trade, accused the EPF officer of being the “mastermind” of MAHB’s proposed deal. – July 18, 2024
