Four Klang Valley water treatment plants resume operations after odour pollution shutdown

Air Selangor says alternative supply provided through 17 local service centres in several locations as it restores direct supply, will try to minimise impact on consumers by monitoring

11:15 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Four water treatment plants have resumed operations after a temporary shutdown earlier today due to an odour pollution incident at Sg Kundang and Sg Sembah.

According to updates from Air Selangor, the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant commenced operations at about 6pm. Meanwhile, Sg Selangor Phase 1, Sg Selangor Phase 2, and Sg Selangor Phase 3 were up and running as of 9pm.

In a social media post at 10.20pm, Air Selangor said alternative water supply assistance through 17 local service centres has been provided for the convenience of Klang Valley consumers affected by the water supply disruptions due to the initial shutdown.

This includes two centres in Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, Kuala Selangor, and Shah Alam each, while four are in Klang, with another five in Petaling.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Water Management Authority said that the water treatment plants resumed operations after Sg Kuang, Sg Kundang, Sg Sembah, and Sg Selangor recorded a threshold odour number (TON) of 0.

“The raw water supply was channelled to the four water treatment plants between 6pm and 8.30pm.”

The authorities will closely monitor the odour pollution effects at the locations involved until the sites are verified to have no more risks or potential harm.

The authority is also keeping an eye on cleaning works at the affected premises, with such processes having reached a 90% completion status.

Earlier, Air Selangor said seven regions – Petaling Jaya, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, and Kuala Selangor – have been hit with water supply disruptions due to recorded odour pollution.

The company then said that alternative aid through tankers was dispatched to the affected areas. – July 23, 2024
