Maybank says customer data protected after claims of leaked database

This after online allegations of bank’s customer info being sold on dark web, including names, ID cards and passwords

KUALA LUMPUR – Maybank has assured customers nationwide that their data is fully protected, following claims online of a database leak from Maybank2U.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page today, Maybank said its systems remained secure and that it took these security concerns seriously.

The bank assured its customers that it would continue to monitor and ensure their data would be protected at all times.

“With the various fraud countermeasures put in place, including the usage of Secure2U to authenticate transactions, and cooling-off period enabled for high risk transactions, our customers’ online transactions continue to be protected.

 “We would like to remind our customers to always remain vigilant and protect their information.

“Please keep your User ID, password and personal details safe, and be cautious of malware, WhatsApp messages, phishing sites and phone calls requesting your credentials,” it said.

Yesterday, an X account called Dark Web Intelligence alleged that the Maybank2u database had been leaked and published on a dark web forum.

It alleged customer data, including names and identification card numbers, were up for sale for US$18,000 (RM84,042), with Chinese customers “preferred”.

Other data said to be leaked include customers’ passwords, address and contact numbers. – July 24, 2024
