KUALA LUMPUR – Turkiye has blocked access to Instagram without public explanation or details.

Its BTK communications authority said in a post on its website that “Instagram.com has been blocked by a decision on the date of 02/08/2024”.

Meanwhile, AFP reported that social media users in Turkiye have taken to X to complain that they could not refresh their Instagram feed.

Two days ago, Turkish presidency’s communications director Fahrettin Altun accused Instagram of “impeding people from publishing messages of condolence for the martyr Haniyeh”.

“This is a very clear and obvious attempt at censure,” Altun tweeted.

Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, who is a close ally of Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was killed in Tehran on Wednesday.

Israel was blamed for the assassination. – August 2, 2024
