Malaysian Aids Council launches campaign on HIV self-testing, targets youths

KUALA LUMPUR – There is low awareness of self-testing for HIV in Malaysia, even though test kits have been available for years, and are used in neighbouring countries such as Vietnam.

In a bid to raise awareness and make it more accessible to youths here, the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) and OraQuick have launched a campaign to promote HIV self-testing, an initiative supported by the Health Ministry.

Malaysian youth are the intended target of this campaign, given that 2023 statistics by the ministry show that the HIV epidemic in Malaysia is notably concentrated among younger adults, with 44% of cases reported in the 20-29 age group and 31% in the 30-39 age group, a MAC spokesman told Scoop.

“This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions that address the specific challenges faced by younger people who are disproportionately affected by the epidemic,” the spokesman said.

MAC, in a press statement, said its campaign called “Double Down on AIDS”, is a partnership with HIV self-test kit maker OraQuick to increase HIV self-testing through a unique fundraising strategy.

From July 17 to September 17, donations to MAC above RM100 will receive tax exemption and a free OraQuick self-testing kit, valued at RM99.

Additionally, OraQuick will also match the donations ringgit for ringgit up to RM15,000, doubling the impact of each contribution. 

The campaign seeks to put self-test kits into the hands of individuals, where before, those seeking HIV testing had to visit clinics or non-governmental organisations to undergo testing.

The MAC spokesman said individuals can now conveniently register on the TestNow website, managed by the council, to receive a complimentary self-testing kit. 

Participants can choose between two types of self-testing options: a blood test, which involves pricking the finger, or a saliva test. 

Furthermore, they can opt for either self pickup at the nearest NGO or doorstep delivery of their testing kit. 

This approach not only enhances accessibility but also ensures greater convenience for users, facilitating easier and respecting privacy.

In the event of a positive result, participants who voluntarily submit their results through the website will receive assistance from a representative, who will guide them through confirmation and treatment options, the spokesman said.

Early detection of HIV is crucial for effective management and treatment. By enabling individuals to test themselves at their convenience, barriers to testing can be removed. – August 2, 2024
