Meta in KL next week to explain removing Anwar’s posts on Haniyeh’s assassination: Fahmi

Meta Southeast Asia’s officials indicate decision to remove posts on Hamas leader’s death comes from higher level, says Communications Minister

4:27 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Meta’s top officials will be here next week to explain the removal of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s post on the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also government spokesman, was reported as saying that the company’s top brass will be coming as the decision to remove the posts was made at a higher level and not by Meta’s Asia regional team.

“The regional team is unclear about the reasons behind the decision,” he said, according to Bernama.

“There’s a possibility it was done at higher levels. Meta in this region are also confused why it happened, so I am not blaming them if it is not their (Meta Southeast Asia) decision, so we will wait for a clearer explanation.

“I understand that a delegation from Meta will be coming to Kuala Lumpur, possibly next week, to explain,” Fahmi said after attending Friday prayers with Anwar at Masjid Negara today.

Anwar has slammed Meta twice in the last two days for removing his posts on Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, on July 31.

The prime minister said Meta should apologise for removing his posts on Instagram, which the tech giant owns in addition to Facebook.

Anwar added the removal showed Meta’s “discrimination against the situation in Palestine and the country’s leaders”.

Yesterday, Anwar again criticised Meta for “acting rude and belittling the Palestinians’ struggle” for removing videos, condolences messages and criticisms of Haniyeh’s assassination.

Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also had his condolence message on Haniyeh posted on Facebook removed. – August 2, 2024
