KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested one individual who was in a viral video showing a group of motorcyclists riding against the flow of traffic in Butterworth, Penang.
Seberang Prai Utara police chief Anuar Abdul Rahman said the motorcyclist was arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless and dangerous riding.
“We have also confiscated as many as 25 motorcycles for various offences,” he said in a statement.
The motorcycles were going against the flow of traffic to avoid being arrested by the authorities as the incident happened when the police traffic investigation and enforcement division was carrying out an operation with the Seberang Prai Utara police crime prevention and community security division last Sunday.
“The incident took place on the Butterworth Outdoor Ring Road Bagan Ajam from the plaza toll heading to the Penang Port North Butterworth Container Terminal,” he added.
Police were alerted to the incident after the video was posted on a Facebook account called Penang Press. The video showed the motorcyclists taking up the first and third lanes of the highway.
Another video uploaded to X was recorded from the perspective of the motorcyclists evading capture.
Police reminded the public to not take part in conduct that will bring danger to themselves and other road users. – August 7, 2024
