Zayn Rayyan’s younger brother placed under grandaunt’s custody for two months

Parents allowed to meet child under certain conditions, judge decides

7:25 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Shah Alam magistrates’ court has placed Zayn Rayyan’s younger brother under the custody of their grandaunt for two months, starting today.

Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman made this decision during this morning’s proceeding, following an hour-long discussion between the family’s lawyer, Nurul Ikrimah Mohd Raya, and the Social Welfare Department, according to Sinar Harian.

Nurul Ikrimah said that the grandaunt will have custody of the boy until October 4, and his parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, are permitted to meet him under certain conditions.

“They can spend a maximum of eight hours with the boy once a week, must take him to special therapy sessions once a month, and are allowed unlimited video calls at any time,” she said.

However, she said that the grandaunt must be present at all times whenever Zayn’s younger brother meets their parents.

Zayn’s younger brother was taken into the Social Welfare Department’s custody on June 14, a day after Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira were charged with child neglect at the Petaling Jaya sessions court.

They are accused of neglecting Zayn, who is under their custody, to the extent that it may have caused him injury.

The 29-year-old parents have been charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, read together with Section 34 of the same act, which stipulates a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, if convicted.

The couple are currently out on RM10,000 bail each.

On December 6 of last year, the body of 6-year-old Zayn was discovered in a stream near Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai.

The post-mortem examination indicated that the child was killed, based on injuries found on his neck and body. – August 9, 2024
