Anwar congratulates Paris Olympics athletes, promises better plans to boost performance

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the public to not bemoan the nation’s performance at the Paris Olympics, assuring that Putrajaya will implement measures to boost the standards of Malaysia’s athletes and sports scene. 

Anwar also expressed his congratulations to the national contingent, which concluded their campaign in France with two bronze medals, both won in badminton. 

“(Athletes) involved in the Paris Olympics have tried their best. We have to accept the results with hopes that, God willing, we will prepare several new frameworks to improve the performance of our national athletes and sports. 

“We have to focus on the future. In the meantime, let’s not complain as our athletes have tried their best and sacrificed a lot,” Anwar said when met by reporters after launching Malaysian Commercialisation Year Summit 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today. 

The Paris Olympics, which drew to a close today, saw Malaysia falling short of their gold medal target. 

However, former men’s doubles world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik managed to retain the bronze medal they won three years ago while independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia secured his first Olympic bronze in the men’s singles. 

In terms of the medal tally, Malaysia ranked 80th out of 206 countries while securing fourth place in Southeast Asia behind the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. – August 12, 2024
