KL police chief unfazed by legal threats amid high-profile lawsuit

Response comes after former intelligence chief filed a RM100 mil lawsuit for tarnishing his reputation from baseless accusations and arrests

5:14 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa affirmed that he is unfazed by any legal threats.

Rusdi’s response comes after former Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) intelligence chief Mat Zaki Zain filed a lawsuit against former Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and 10 others, including Rusdi, seeking RM100 million in damages.

The lawsuit also names former Selangor police chief Jalil Hassan and current Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan as defendants.

In January, Mat Zaki and eight others were acquitted by the Tawau High Court of the charge of murdering Nurman Bakaratu after the deceased’s former wife, Nurimah Juli, confessed to the murder during her testimony.

It was reported that Zaki recently claimed that baseless accusations and arrests have damaged his reputation within the intelligence communities of Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, impacting their joint efforts against cross-border terrorism.

“Anyone has the right to file any claim in a civil court.

“We will wait. I have not received the summons yet. Once I receive the summons, we will respond within the given timeframe,” said Rusdi in a press conference after presenting medals at an award ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur contingent headquarters today.

Meanwhile, Rusdi revealed that so far, three out of 12 suspects who were arrested in connection with a recent fight at an entertainment centre in Pudu have been charged.

“We have recently opened an investigation under the 1960 Arms Act, and three of the offenders have been found guilty.

“Their punishment will be a fine of RM2,500, or they will serve prison for four months if they fail to pay the fine. As for the rest of the suspects, we will continue the interrogation in the coming days,” Rusdi added.

It was reported that the fight at the Pudu entertainment centre on August 15 left four people injured, with police arresting suspects between the ages of 20 and 40.

The motive for the fight is believed to be a financial debt issue. – August 21, 2024
