Muhyiddin to face sedition charges tomorrow

The former prime minister had spoken about the royal institution during the recent Nenggiri by-election

1:46 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will face sedition charges tomorrow in Gua Musang, Kelantan, over a political speech touching on the royalty during the recent Nenggiri by-election.

Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris confirmed to Scoop that the party president will be charged tomorrow.

“At the Gua Musang sessions court,” Razali said briefly.

Muhyiddin, who is also chairman of opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN), was investigated for speaking on 3R (race, religion, royalty)  during a ceramah in Kelantan for the recent by-election.

He was recorded on video speaking about how he had the support of 115 MPs to be prime minister, but was not invited by the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong to form the federal government after the 2022 general election.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has also confirmed to New Straits Times that Muhyiddin will be charged tomorrow under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.

Last week, police questioned Muhyiddin over the matter as part of their investigation after several police reports were lodged against the former prime minister.

Muhyiddin handed over documents to back his claim, including a letter dated November 21, 2022 from  the senior private secretary of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Datuk Nizam Mohd Alin, which allegedly confirms the receipt of 115 statutory declarations (SDs) endorsing the PN chairman as Prime Minister, as well as the 115 SDs themselves.

Police handed over investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on August 21.

Muhyiddin is also currently facing other charges for abuse of power related to the Jana Wibawa scheme implemented when he was prime minister, and charges of receiving illegal proceeds amounting to RM195 million from Bukhara Equity Sdn Bhd. – August 26, 2024
