Search for sinkhole victim still at Pantai Dalam sewage plant, team clearing blocked manhole path

A total of six manholes within Jalan Masjid India-Pantai Dalam sewage plant area were opened in stages

2:32 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The search and rescue operation for the Indian national who fell into an eight-metre sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India, resumed today at the sewage plant in Pantai Dalam even though the previous search was fruitless.

This time, however, in addition to the “flushing” technique, the search team is breaking up debris blocking the sewerage line, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said, Bernama reports.

“Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) will break up the debris (blockage) using a jetter (sewer jet machine) in the manhole path of the incident location to the manhole downstream over a distance of 69 metres,” DBKL said.

The Fire and Rescue Department will then inspect the manhole.

Earlier, IWK had carried out “flushing” work in the fifth manhole late last night until 2 this morning but did not find any clues.

A total of six manholes in the vicinity of Jalan Masjid India and up to the Pantai Dalam sewage plant were opened in stages to search for the victim.

The search for the Indian national, who was previously identified as Vijayalaksmi but is Vijayletchumy, 48, is now in the fourth day after she disappeared into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India on Friday.

She was reportedly walking to a temple when the pavement under her suddenly gave way, causing her to fall into an 8 metre-deep hole. – August 26, 2024
