ALOR STAR – Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department from the Kulim Hi-Tech area have rescued four individuals in Kg Ulu Tengah, Kulim from being swept by a strong river current.

According to the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, the operation room of the Kulim Hi-Tech fire station was alerted to a flood emergency call from the village at 11.12 pm yesterday, to which the personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene

Upon arriving at the village, the rescuers found four individuals trapped on the other side of the river due to strong currents and initiated a rescue operation by crossing the river.

“As of 3.50am (today), the operation chief reported that all victims have been rescued and they are in good condition.

“The victims were (later) handed over to their families and the operation ended at 4.27am,” said Kedah Fire and Rescue Department in a Facebook post.

Kulim was hit by floods following thunderstorms and downpours which hit Kedah yesterday, leading to a temporary relief centre being opened last night to shelter 48 people from the 12 families affected.

10 other states including neighbouring Penang were also hit by extreme weather.

Bernama reported Kedah Civil Defence Force as saying that the temporary shelter is currently housing victims from Kg Sg Seluang Atas and Kg Sg Seluang Bawah.

The evacuees comprise 17 adults, 15 children, eight senior citizens and eight non-citizens

According to the Civil Defence Force, heavy rainfall for several hours yesterday caused water levels to rise rapidly, prompting the evacuation of affected residents later that night. – September 8, 2024
