Heavy downpours, strong winds cause flash floods, uproot trees in Penang

MetMalaysia issues a Category 1 warning for strong winds and rough seas in Penang, Labuan, and three other states until Saturday

GEORGE TOWN — Thunderstorms and heavy downpours caused flash floods in several parts of Penang this morning.

Checks by Scoop on Facebook found several posts about flash floods in Permatang Rawa, near Bandar Perda.

When contacted, the Bandar Perda zone Fire and Rescue Department said it is currently conducting site inspections, with a report to be issued after the inspections are completed.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Permatang Pasir assemblyman Amir Hamzah Abdul Hashim stated that aid would be sent to Permatang Rawa and Tanah Liat following a visit to a flood-hit village.

The Bukit Mertajam zone Fire and Rescue Department also confirmed to Scoop that it is inspecting the flood situation at Jalan Gajah Mati, near Taman Jambu, where water levels have reportedly reached knee height.

Nibong Tebal is also understood to have been affected by flash floods.

In addition, strong winds have uprooted trees in several areas across the state, including Butterworth, Kepala Batas, and Tanjung Bungah on the island.

According to Lee Seng Hwai, a city councillor with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), several tree uprooting incidents were reported at five locations in Tanjung Bungah: near Tenby International School, SJKC Poay Wah, Taman Concorde, Jalan Concorde 12, and Jalan Batu Ferringhi.

The city council has since cleared the fallen trees, he said in a Facebook post. Reports of tree uprooting incidents have been coming in since last Sunday, with 20 incidents recorded in various locations in George Town.

Separately, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a Category 1 strong wind and rough sea warning for Penang, Kedah, Perlis, western Sabah, Labuan, the northern part of the Strait of Malacca, Condore, southwest of Reef North, and Sulu.

“Strong winds with speeds of 40-50 km per hour and waves reaching as high as 3.5m are expected in coastal areas of Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, western Sabah, and Labuan until Saturday (September 21),” MetMalaysia said in a statement. — September 17, 2024
