Bodyguard’s assault on e-hailing driver still an open case: PM

Prime Minister says case not closed, tells public not to make hasty judgements

5:34 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The assault of a disabled e-hailing driver by a police escort of a VVIP is still under investigation by police, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Who said the case is closed?

“The police must be satisfied, the AG (Attorney-general) must be satisfied (with investigation findings) and take action,” he was quoted by New Straits Times when speaking to reporters after Friday prayers in Kampung Pasir, Puchong, here today.

Anwar said Malaysia follows the rue of law and the public should not make judgements based on perceptions or hearsay.

The e-hailing driver is Ong Ing Keong, a deaf-mute, who on May 28 was punched in the head by the bodyguard of a VVIP while he was picking up passengers outside a hotel here.

It later emerged that the bodyguard being investigated was a member of the security detail of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Abdullah, who called for a thorough investigation.

In June, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the investigation papers on the case had been sent to the Attorny-General’s Chambers.

In August, Razarudin said Bukit Aman had taken internal disciplinary action against the officer.

To date, there have been no further developments despite repeated statements by Ong’s lawyers as well as the Deaf Advocacy and Well-Being National Organisation (DAWN), calling for action.

On September 5, Ong, together with 36 groups, handed a memorandum to a representative of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya demanding an inquiry into the assault incident.

They also want an explanation on the lack of action against the bodyguard, who is from the police. – September 20, 2024
