RM6 billion unpaid PTPTN loans, 430,000 defaulters to face the music

Higher education minister urges borrowers to discuss repayment plans as PTPTN faces financial strain due to decades of unpaid loans

KUALA LUMPUR – The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) is set to take action against 430,000 defaulters who have failed to repay their loans, amounting to RM6 billion.

Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, revealed that some of these borrowers have been graduates for decades without making a single payment.

“This category of borrowers has been indifferent since leaving university. They have not informed us of their circumstances, where they work, or how they plan to repay.

“They should have come forward to discuss their situation with us.

“We have had in-depth discussions at the cabinet level to determine the next steps.

“I do not deny that follow-up actions will be taken against these individuals, including legal action,” he said during a programme in Lumut, Perak earlier today.

He added that the irresponsible behaviour of these borrowers has placed PTPTN in a worrying financial position.

Details regarding the timeframe and the form of action to be taken against these borrowers will be announced by PTPTN in the near future.

“I want to reiterate that we remain reasonable. We understand the (economic) situation, but we want these individuals to come to the PTPTN office and explain their circumstances.

“They also have a moral responsibility to repay the loan as the money will be used to help future generations,” he said. – 21 September, 2024
