Northern region, Cameron Highlands issued thunderstorm, heavy downpour warning: MetMalaysia

The entire states of Perlis and Penang, as well as 10 districts in Kedah, are under alert

KUALA LUMPUR – The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm and heavy downpour warning by the for the northern region of the peninsula, along with Cameron Highlands in Pahang.

The warning, issued at 11.00 am, remained in effect until 2.00 pm. The entire states of Perlis and Penang, as well as 10 districts in Kedah, are under alert.

The affected districts in Kedah are Langkawi Island, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu.

In Perak, warnings have been issued for eight districts: Kerian, Larut, Matang dan Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Kinta, Perak Tengah, and Kampar.

This warning comes as Kedah continues to recover from last week’s flash floods, which hit several areas of the state, making it the worst affected region.

According to a Bernama report, the number of flood victims in Kedah and Perak has decreased, with 6,833 people housed in 34 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) as of 8.00 am this morning, down from 7,210 people last night.

In Kedah, the number of flood victims has reduced to 6,804 from 2,173 families, compared to 7,181 people placed in 33 evacuation centres across four districts last night.

Kota Setar continues to report the highest number of displaced residents, with 4,638 people, followed by Pendang (1,606), Kubang Pasu (493), and Pokok Sena with 67 people.

Meanwhile, in Perak, the state disaster management committee secretariat stated that the total number of flood victims remains at 29 people from seven families, housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Lobak evacuation centre in Kerian. — September 24, 2024
