KUALA LUMPUR – Firefly flight FY1424 en route to Penang was forced to return to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang after smoke began building up in the cabin.

According to FlightRadar24, the ATR 72-500 aircraft departed Subang at 6.50am before making a sudden diversion over the coast near Jeram, Kuala Selangor around 10 minutes later.

The plane began its descent over Elmina, Shah Alam at 7.07 am before landing at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at 7.10 am.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed the incident to the New Straits Times, explaining it was caused by the air-conditioning system overheating.

CAAM chief executive officer, Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud was quoted as saying that initial reports revealed flight FY1424 experienced an extraction fan failure upon take off.

So far, there are no reports of any injuries following the incident. – October 3, 2024
