KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) discovered foreign currency worth approximately RM5 million after raiding an apartment here, which was allegedly used as a storage site or “safehouse” by a prominent politician yesterday.

Following the raid, which took place around 10pm last night, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed to Scoop that two suspects had been detained.

He stated that the case involved corruption related to securing a sand mining concession from Selangor Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI).

Sources indicated that the apartment was believed to have been rented by a businessman as a place to store money obtained from corrupt activities.

According to the sources, the two suspects, including a former senior executive at MBI, were allegedly linked to a well-known politician who previously held political influence in Selangor.

“Following the arrests, one of the suspects revealed the existence of the ‘safehouse,’ which was used to store bribery money belonging to the influential politician.

“The raid on the apartment uncovered SG$1,529,000 in Singaporean currency, equivalent to around RM5 million.

“The money was intended for the politician’s political activities and has been seized by MACC for further investigation,” the source said today.

The source also mentioned that the money is believed to have been provided by an unidentified individual and was kept by the businessman under the politician’s instructions. – October 13, 2024
