If it was under Mara, you touch, you go: Asyraf Wajdi on recurring uni bullying

Mara chairman expresses disappointment as it seemed like ‘no lessons learnt’ from previous cases amid MAF’s probe into new UPNM incident

10:48 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – In the wake of an alleged bullying case involving a cadet at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki posted on Facebook to express his deep disappointment over recurring abuse incidents within Malaysia’s educational institutions.

“There seems to be no lesson learned from past cases that led to fatalities. If it happens in any Mara educational institution, including MRSM, there will be no compromise,” his post said.

The Umno secretary-general’s message reiterated his commitment to enforcing a strict no-compromise policy in Mara institutions.

“You touch, you go. There is no need to meet me to appeal or try to gain sympathy because warnings have been given repeatedly,” he stated firmly, emphasising that student safety remains a top priority within Mara educational establishments.

It is believed that his statement came after the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) launched an investigation into a viral incident involving a UPNM cadet reportedly assaulted by a senior. According to MAF, the alleged abuse involved pressing a hot iron against the cadet’s chest during a military training camp.

MAF released a statement yesterday confirming that a thorough investigation is underway, with assurances that any guilty parties will face severe disciplinary and legal action.

On Wednesday, The Merdeka Times (TMT) reported that the assault was accidentally discovered by an instructor on duty following a routine inspection, during which the cadet’s injuries became apparent.

This incident recalls a tragic 2017 case that left a lasting impact on the nation and the people when UPNM naval cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain lost his life after being brutally tortured by his peers.

Zulfarhan’s case, which involved being repeatedly burned with a hot steam iron, shocked the nation and underscored the need for stronger protections against bullying within educational institutions.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to visit UPNM today for the “Temu Anwar” programme, an appearance that, given recent events, has heightened public interest in potential discussions on student welfare and institutional accountability. – November 1, 2024
