KUALA LUMPUR – A man who allegedly assaulted a disabled e-hailing driver at a hotel on May 28 will be charged in court here this morning, according to a police statement.

Kuala Lumpur police said the individual, who is an escort to a prominent figure, is being charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to one year, or a fine of up to RM 2,000, or both.

Previously, it was reported that the e-hailing driver claimed he was assaulted by a security escort accompanying a VIP entourage in the hotel lobby in the capital city. However, he later withdrew his police report.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa stated that the individual filed a second police report on May 28 to withdraw his first report.

However, on May 31, the driver stated that he never retracted his police report.

Following this, police recorded statements from 12 individuals to assist with the investigation, including the involved aide and hotel staff present at the incident location, Berita Harian reported.

Statements were also taken from members of the Royal Malaysia Police Special Action Unit, the aide, the complainant’s friend, a doctor, and Grab’s operations director. – November 4, 2024
