US election: Trump regrets leaving White House while Harris vows Gaza peace efforts

Both presidential candidates will face off on Nov 5, with almost 80 million Americans having already cast early ballots

KUALA LUMPUR – In a weekend campaign rally, former US president Donald Trump voiced regret about stepping down after the 2020 election, which he never formally conceded. The election led to Democrat Joe Biden’s victory, but Trump has continuously disputed the result, alleging voter fraud. 

Speaking in Pennsylvania, he said, “I shouldn’t have left,” citing what he described as his administration’s achievements, including a strong economy and secure borders, dpa reported.

The comments come as Trump, running as the Republican presidential candidate, faces a tight rematch in the 2024 US presidential election against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who is campaigning to make history as the first female president of the United States. 

During her own rally in Michigan, Harris promised to prioritise peace in the Middle East, particularly Gaza, where conflict has intensified. 

“As president, I will do everything in my power to end the war in Gaza, bring home the hostages, end the suffering, ensure Israel’s security, and support Palestinian rights,” she told supporters, according to Anadolu Agency.

With Election Day slated for November 5, the stakes are high. The contest is currently close, with national polling averages showing a narrow margin, and both candidates are focusing heavily on swing states. 

Trump and Harris have spent significant time campaigning in battleground states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, each of which could determine the election outcome.

The US election does not merely choose the president but also shapes Congress, where Senate and House seats will influence the legislative landscape. 

Nearly 80 million Americans have already cast early ballots, with Democrats currently leading in early voting turnout. – November 4, 2024
