Federal govt sues ex-Damansara Holdings chairman Syed Alwi over unpaid taxes

The lawyer and eldest son of the late Tun Syed Nasir Ismail allegedly owed RM245,982.39 to the Inland Revenue Board over the span of 5 years

8:00 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The federal government has filed a lawsuit against Datuk Syed Alwi Nasir, the former chairman of Damansara Holdings Berhad, for five years of unpaid taxes.

In a statement of claim lodged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on October 21, the federal government outlined that the Inland Revenue Board had issued notices to Syed Alwi, instructing him to settle his taxes in instalments for the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The court documents state that Syed Alwi allegedly owes RM245,982.39 in unpaid taxes.

As of now, the e-filing system shows that Syed Alwi has not yet filed a defence in response to the government’s allegations. However, the case is scheduled for management on November 21.

According to records from the Companies Commission, Syed Alwi was a director of Damansara Holdings Berhad until 2006.

He is also a lawyer and the founding partner of Syed Alwi Ng & Co, a law firm with four branches across the country.

Syed Alwi is the eldest son of the late Tun Syed Nasir Ismail, former Dewan Rakyat Speaker, who passed away after collapsing from a heart attack in parliament in 1982.

The federal government has recently been pursuing high-profile individuals for unpaid taxes.

On October 1, the Kuala Lumpur High Court scheduled an appeal by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his son Nazifuddin for January 6 next year, after they failed to settle RM1.69 billion and RM37.6 million in tax arrears, respectively.

Meanwhile, on October 18, the Shah Alam High Court denied an application from Toh Puan Na’imah Khalid, the wife of former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, for an interim stay of an order requiring her to pay RM313.8 million in tax arrears. – November 7, 2024
