KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will still be able to serve as prime minister after he hits PKR’s three-term presidency limit, said party information chief Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said this is due to how Anwar retains the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairmanship while also being the chairman of the unity government’s leadership council.
“There is no issue (as Anwar still holds the positions above). There is no conflict in the matter.
“PKR does indeed have a three-term limit for the president’s position…but, (Anwar) can continue serving as prime minister now and even for the next term,” Fahmi told reporters after launching the 2024 National Courier Day event in Cyberjaya today.
Anwar, who has been PH chairman since 2020, will mark his final term as PKR president during the party’s upcoming elections, scheduled to take place next year.
On November 7, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said that Anwar would defend the party’s presidency during its polls.
She pointed out that since Anwar has already completed two terms as party president since 2018, the 2025 party elections will be his final term holding the post.
She stressed, however, that Anwar had previously stated that one does not need to be a party president to be prime minister, adding: “As long as we need him, there’s no issue with it.”
Last month, Anwar had called for the PKR polls to be expedited, noting that speeding up the election would create opportunities for collaborations between younger members and veteran leaders.
This, he said, would allow for all quarters to work together in managing the party more effectively. – November 9, 2024
