MCMC probes public university student for selling homemade explicit videos on X

Suspect has 100,000 followers on X and makes up to RM3,000 a month from the illegal activity

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a male student from a public higher learning institution for allegedly selling lewd videos of himself on social media platform X. 

The commission found the suspect to have begun begun uploading available pornographic content to X in 2021. 

Later, his modus operandi changed to posting and selling explicit content of himself and his female acquaintance, MCMC said in a statement.

The suspect garnered over 100,000 followers on X, and amassed up to RM3,000 a month from video sales, with each clip priced at approximately RM150, the commission added.

“(The suspect’s) activities were uncovered as a result of monitoring efforts and intelligence gathered by MACC based on public complaints,” the commission said, noting that the case is being investigated under Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 

The law prohibits the use of a network service or application to provide obscene communication for commercial purposes. If convicted, the suspect can be fined up to RM50,000, jailed for a maximum term of one year or both. 

MACC has since recorded the suspect’s statement and seized a handphone as well as a SIM card believed to have been used by the suspect to upload the illegal content, following a raid on a Shah Alam premises. 

The commission also recorded the statement of the suspect’s acquaintance, a female student from a private higher education institute. 

“The public is urged to report the distribution and sale of explicit content on any social media platforms to MACC for further enforcement action,” it added. – November 14, 2024
